Taste profile

Your three listening modes

Derived from play counts, loved tracks, and genre clustering. These aren’t categories you picked — they’re patterns the data revealed.

  • Cluster 1 · Deep listening

    Ambient and game

Still your most-played cluster by a wide margin — C418, Jesper Kyd, Lorne Balfe, Darren Korb dominate the top 25. Tycho now at 133 plays and 6 loved — fully graduated. Jon Hopkins at 110 plays. GameChops collab artists (Curly, Super Piano 64, Sixth Station Trio, Rozen) are the active Inbox batch right now, expanding the game music wing significantly.

    C418 · Jesper Kyd · Kodomo · Jon Hopkins · Darren Korb · Lorne Balfe · TPR · GENTLE LOVE · Tycho · Danger · BT

    Flow / focus mode

  • Cluster 2 · Comfort zone

    90s/00s alt-rock

Inbox graduates confirmed: Foster the People (9 loved, 101 plays), Our Lady Peace (8 loved), Dave Matthews Band (8 loved), Toad the Wet Sprocket (6 loved) all promoted. Dislike data also sharpened the borders here — Rush, The Doors, Avenged Sevenfold, classic hard rock flagged out.

Matchbox Twenty · Goo Goo Dolls · Counting Crows · Tonic · Sister Hazel · Lifehouse · Collective Soul · Fuel · Foster the People · Our Lady Peace · Dave Matthews Band · Toad the Wet Sprocket

    Comfort / nostalgia mode

  • Cluster 3 · New discovery

    Acoustic, folk, coffeehouse

Brand new cluster this pass — Morning Coffeehouse Serenity (Apple-curated, 25 tracks) signals a taste expansion into Iron & Wine, Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Tracy Chapman, Ray LaMontagne, George Ezra. This didn’t exist as a distinct category in the library before the trip. Nascent but real.

Iron & Wine · Fleet Foxes · Bon Iver · Tracy Chapman · Ray LaMontagne · George Ezra · Vance Joy · Ben Howard · Angus & Julia Stone · The Paper Kites

Duplicates

105 real duplicate groups, 128 excess tracks. (239 additional ghost entries exist in Apple’s database but are invisible in the UI and filtered out here.) Numbers are roughly stable from last pass — the ghost-entry issue from the previous export is largely resolved with the forced clean sync. Continue working through these at your own pace; the high-play/loved ones are the priority.

How to remove in Apple Music: Right-click a track → Remove from Library. For Apple Music streaming tracks, this removes them from your library but doesn’t affect your account. Note: Apple Music doesn’t let you delete from a playlist view directly to the library level — you’ll need to find them in the main Music library view.

Scoring: +100 for loved, +2×plays, −20 for Greatest Hits/Best Of/Essential, −10 for Singles, +5 for Deluxe, +3 for Remaster. Ties broken by play count.

Playlists

Good playlist hygiene this pass — the Lucas sub-mixes (12 playlists) are gone, Mega Mix converted to a lean 39-track manual playlist. That alone dropped total significant overlaps from 107 down to 39. Remaining actionable overlaps are mostly intentional (Eugene Car Tunes ↔ Vacation Mix) or structurally interesting (Perfect Focus ↔ Replay All Time). The Cities: Skylines (Favorites) deletion from an earlier pass also cleaned up the 100% overlap that was previously at the top of this list.

Significant overlaps

Playlist pairs sharing ≥20% of their tracks. High overlap = possible consolidation candidate.

  1. Video Game Master List and Melancholy Mix

    79% · 64 tracks shared

64 tracks shared between a game source playlist and a mood playlist. These are probably intentionally melancholy-feeling game tracks — but worth knowing if you ever want to separate source from mood.

  2. Perfect Focus and Replay All Time

    78% · 51 tracks shared

51 tracks shared — your focus playlist and all-time replay list are nearly identical. Given that C418 dominates both, this might just be accurate: your most-replayed tracks are your focus music.

  3. The 1975 Essentials and Replay All Time

    78% · 31 tracks shared

Replay All Time pulls heavily from The 1975 Essentials — 31 of your all-time replays are 1975 tracks.

  4. Adventure & Ambience and Dad’s Game Mix

Recommendations

Post-trip update: Inbox cleared. Foster the People, Our Lady Peace, Dave Matthews Band, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Howie Day, Vertical Horizon all graduated with meaningful loved/play counts. Danger (French synthwave) was a surprise hit at 102 plays. The coffeehouse/folk direction is new and worth developing.

Electronic, ambient, electronica: round 2

Previous batch (Brian Eno, Aphex Twin, Austin Wintory) didn’t fully click. This round leans into BT/Tycho as the anchor and pushes toward warmer, more driving electronica: Boards of Canada, Bonobo, Amon Tobin, and deeper Jon Hopkins catalog.

  • BT

You have BT in your taste profile already — so this is deepening that thread rather than going somewhere new. ESCM and This Binary Universe are the cornerstones: dense, layered electronic that sits right between Kodomo’s atmospheric side and the more propulsive energy of your Electric Pulse playlist. Stutter edit pioneer, still one of the best.

Start with ‘Flaming June’, ‘Remember’, ‘The Force of Gravity’, This Binary Universe album

  • Tycho

Already in your library and scoring well on plays — Tycho is the artist in your collection that most bridges ambient and electronic. The move here is to go deeper: Awake and Epoch are the two records that show his full range from hazy instrumental to more driving post-rock electronics.

Start with ‘Awake’, ‘Dive’, ‘Epoch’, ‘Division’

  • Röyksopp

Norwegian electronic duo — warm, melodic, and accessible in a way that maps directly to your Jon Hopkins / Tycho taste without going experimental. Their earlier albums Melody A.M. and The Understanding are the sweet spot: lush synths, gentle beats, emotionally resonant without being ambient in the sleepy sense.

Start with ‘Remind Me’, ‘Poor Leno’, ‘What Else Is There?’, ‘The Drug Is You’

  • M83

French electronic/shoegaze project — cinematic, melodic, and built for exactly the emotional register that Jesper Kyd and Darren Korb occupy in your library. Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming is the masterpiece. Feels like a film score made of synths. Very different from Boards of Canada’s hazy lo-fi direction.

Start with ‘Midnight City’, ‘Wait’, ‘Outro’, ‘Intro’, ‘Steve McQueen’

  • Ólafur Arnalds

Icelandic composer mixing minimalist piano with ambient electronics — you had him in your Optimistic Chill playlist early on, which means he already clicked at least once. Sits right between your game score love and lo-fi chill playlists, and pairs naturally with Jon Hopkins. Worth a proper full-album listen rather than a one-off track.

Start with ‘Near Light’, ‘Brot’, ‘Only the Winds’, re: remember album

  • Jon Hopkins (deeper cuts)

You have Halcyon with 97 plays — that’s one track off Opalescent. The deeper catalog is very different and worth the dig: Immunity is more driving club-adjacent electronic, Singularity goes ambient/spiritual. Both are excellent and neither sounds like Halcyon.

Start with Immunity album — ‘Open Eye Signal’, ‘Sun Harmonics’; Singularity — ‘Emerald Rush’

90s and 00s alt-rock adjacent

Based on Matchbox Twenty, Goo Goo Dolls, Counting Crows, Tonic, Collective Soul being your most-loved artists.

  • Semisonic

    Already added

Already in your Inbox — 6 tracks added including Chemistry, Secret Smile, and This Will Be My Year. Deep cut recommendation: the album Feeling Strangely Fine has more depth than the Greatest Hits version suggests. Great Divide (their follow-up) is underrated.

Start with Already in Inbox — explore Feeling Strangely Fine and Great Divide albums

  • Seven Mary Three

Pure 90s alt-rock sitting right between Collective Soul and Fuel in your library — both of which are solid performers in your data. Cumbersome was a radio staple you’d recognize immediately. The album American Standard holds up well.

Start with ‘Cumbersome’, ‘Water’s Edge’, ‘Times Like These’, ‘My My’

  • Howie Day

    Already added

Perfect Time of Day is in your Inbox. If that clicks, Stop All the World Now is the full album — She Says, Be There, and Collide are all at the same emotional register as your Lifehouse/Rob Thomas core.

Start with Already in Inbox — add Stop All the World Now album if Perfect Time of Day lands

  • Vertical Horizon

    Already added

Miracle is in your Inbox. That album Everything You Want has ‘You’re a God’ and ‘Best I Ever Had (Grey Sky Morning)’ which are both fully in your 2000s alt-rock comfort zone.

Start with Already in Inbox — add full Everything You Want album

  • Augustana

    Already added

Five tracks in your Inbox including Stars and Boulevards and Coffee and Cigarettes. These are the deeper cuts from All the Stars and Boulevards. If they resonate, Can’t Love, Can’t Hurt is the sophomore follow-up.

Start with Already in Inbox — add Can’t Love, Can’t Hurt if the Inbox tracks land

  • Toad the Wet Sprocket

Your library loves Counting Crows and Sister Hazel’s acoustic-leaning, emotionally direct alt-rock. Toad is exactly that — All I Want is one of the great overlooked songs of the early 90s alt era. Fear and Dulcinea are both excellent full albums.

Start with ‘All I Want’, ‘Walk on the Ocean’, ‘Something’s Always Wrong’, ‘Fall Down’

Acoustic, folk, coffeehouse: a new direction

Morning Coffeehouse Serenity is a brand new playlist with no prior precedent in your library. These recommendations develop that direction further based on what’s already in it.

  • Iron & Wine

Already on your Morning Coffeehouse Serenity playlist — this is about going deeper into the catalog rather than a new discovery. The Creek Drank the Cradle and Our Endless Numbered Days are the essential records. Quiet, intimate, acoustic. If the playlist track landed, the albums will too.

Start with ‘Naked As We Came’, ‘Flightless Bird’, ‘Fever Dream’, ‘Passing Afternoon’

  • Gregory Alan Isakov

Colorado folk artist who sits exactly in the gap between Ray LaMontagne’s weathered Americana and Bon Iver’s atmospheric folk. This Empty Northern Hemisphere is one of the best folk records of the last 20 years and almost no one knows it.

Start with ‘The Stable Song’, ‘3 a.m.’, ‘Big Black Car’, ‘That Sea, the Gambler’

  • The Head and the Heart

Seattle folk-rock band — big harmonies, acoustic-driven, sits right between Fleet Foxes and a more accessible Counting Crows. Signs of Light is probably their most accessible album, but the debut is the one.

Start with ‘Lost in My Mind’, ‘Rivers and Roads’, ‘Down in the Valley’

  • Lord Huron

Cinematic folk-rock with a slightly mythic, storytelling quality. Strange Trails is the album — it sounds like a movie soundtrack made entirely of campfire songs. Very compatible with your film score love + new folk direction.

Start with ‘The Night We Met’, ‘Fool for Love’, ‘Long Lost’

  • Novo Amor

Welsh ambient folk — the intersection of your coffeehouse direction and your ambient/atmospheric cluster. Quiet, layered, no drums, intimate production. If Iron & Wine is clicking for you, this is the natural next step. Repeat Until Death and Birthplace are the albums to start with.

Start with ‘Anchor’, ‘Carry You’, ‘State Lines’, ‘Repeat Until Death’

  • Mt. Joy

Indie folk-rock with warm production — sits between Vance Joy’s accessibility and Fleet Foxes’ texture. Their self-titled debut has an easy, unhurried feel that maps well to what Morning Coffeehouse Serenity is going for.

Start with ‘Cardinal’, ‘Astrovan’, ‘Silver Lining’, ‘Younger Days’

Acoustic and instrumental covers

You have “Creative Covers” and “Pop Goes Classical” playlists — here’s more to fill them.

  • The Piano Guys

Cello + piano arrangements of pop and classical crossovers — perfect for your Pop Goes Classical playlist and Creative Covers. They’ve covered everything from One Direction to Beethoven with genuine skill.

Start with ‘A Thousand Years’, ‘Let It Go’, ‘Titanium/Pavane’

  • Brooklyn Duo

Cello and piano duo doing intimate, warmly-recorded covers of contemporary songs — closer in feel to The Piano Guys but more understated and less theatrical. No jazz influence, no excessive arranging. Just two instruments done beautifully. Covers everything from Radiohead to Billie Eilish.

Start with ‘Creep’, ‘bad guy’, ‘A Thousand Years’, ‘Comptine d’un autre été’

  • Vitamin String Quartet (select albums only)

Previous suggestion flagged as too much violin — but their piano-forward and softer chamber albums are a different story. Their Radiohead and Bon Iver tribute albums in particular lean cello/viola rather than violin-heavy. Worth sampling those specific records rather than their catalog broadly.

Start with VSQ Performs Radiohead, VSQ Performs Bon Iver — sample before committing

  • Sleeping At Last

Folk/indie artist known for achingly beautiful piano-driven covers and originals. His Atlas series and cover albums are widely used in film/TV. Very much in your acoustic/melancholy space.

Start with ‘Saturn’, ‘Two’, Covers album series

  • Acoustic covers — pending

Vitamin String Quartet and PostModern Jukebox were previous suggestions here that had the right concept but wrong execution — too much jazz, too much violin. Softer acoustic cover recommendations coming in a future pass once there’s more data on what’s landing in the coffeehouse/folk direction.

Game music and lo-fi expansions

Based on your OCRemix collection, GENTLE LOVE, Mikel & GameChops, and nintendo lofi playlist.

  • Lena Raine

Composed the Celeste soundtrack — one of the most acclaimed game scores in recent memory. Sits in your C418/ambient lane but with more emotional narrative arc. Also composed for Guild Wars 2 and Chicory.

Start with ‘Resurrections’, ‘Exhale’, ‘Reach for the Summit’

  • Mikel & GameChops

    Already added

Already a library staple with 262 plays — the Inbox batch right now is built around GameChops collab artists (Rozen, Sixth Station Trio, Curly, Super Piano 64). That’s the active discovery thread. Once the Inbox settles, the plays data will tell you exactly which GameChops sub-artists to add fully vs. pass on.

Start with Currently in Inbox — let plays decide

  • Lena Raine

    Already added

33 plays accumulated without being actively pushed — that’s passive discovery working as intended. Celeste OST is the core record. She also composed for Guild Wars 2 and Chicory: A Colorful Tale. Worth adding the full Celeste and Chicory soundtracks if you haven’t.

Start with Celeste OST full album, Chicory: A Colorful Tale OST

  • GameChops

You already have Mikel & GameChops in your library — but there’s a full GameChops catalog of lo-fi, jazz, and chill arrangements of game music. Perfect for your nintendo lofi playlist expansion.

Start with GameChops Zelda arrangements, GameChops lo-fi collections

  • Rozen

OCRemix veteran who’s done some of the most acclaimed arrangements on the site — if you’re curating your OCRemix collection, Rozen is a reliable name to specifically seek out.

Start with Search ‘Rozen’ on OCRemix.org for full catalog

  • Austin Wintory

Composed the Journey (PS3) and Abzû soundtracks — atmospheric, orchestral game scoring that sits exactly between Jesper Kyd’s AC2 work and Darren Korb’s Bastion. One of the most acclaimed game scores of the last 15 years, and acoustically very close to what your top-played tracks sound like.

Start with Journey OST — ‘Apotheosis’, ‘Nascence’; Abzû OST — ‘Abyss’

Better habits

Apple Music’s recommendation engine is genuinely mediocre — you’re not imagining it. But there are a few levers that actually matter, and some you’re probably underusing.

  1. The Love button is your most powerful tool — but you’re only using half of it

You have 1,244 loved tracks, which is great. But Apple Music’s algorithm also learns from Dislike (long-press the heart → Suggest Less Like This). You’re essentially giving the algorithm 1,244 positive signals with almost no negative ones — it’s like a rating system where you never give below 3 stars. Start actively disliking tracks that Autoplay or Radio serves you that miss the mark. It’s tedious for a week, then noticeably better.

  2. Use ‘Start Station’ from your best-loved artists, not from songs

Apple Music Radio is dramatically better when seeded from an artist you love rather than a single song. Go to Matchbox Twenty’s artist page → ••• → Start Station. This pools their sonic DNA rather than chasing one song’s audio fingerprint. For your ambient/game cluster, seed stations from C418 or Jon Hopkins specifically — not from Minecraft or Halcyon as individual tracks.

  3. 98 dislikes logged — the algorithm now has something real to work with

This is the single biggest improvement since the project started. You went from essentially zero negative signal to 98 disliked tracks, and the pattern is clear: classic hard rock (Rush, The Doors, Deep Purple, Avenged Sevenfold), some country (Carrie Underwood x3, Jason Aldean, Toby Keith), and pop-adjacent tracks that don’t fit (Bruno Mars, Maroon 5). Apple Music’s algorithm needs both positive and negative signals — before this pass it was flying half-blind. Keep using long-press → Suggest Less Like This whenever something misses. The duplicate count is now filtered down to 105 real groups — continue at your own pace.

  4. The ‘Focus’ mode integration is underused for your use case

Since you have a Moods folder and clearly have distinct listening contexts (focus work vs. comfort), consider setting up Apple Music shortcuts in Shortcuts.app tied to Focus modes. ‘Work Focus’ → auto-play Perfect Focus playlist. ‘Relax Focus’ → Lo-Fi Chill. Takes 10 minutes to set up and means one tap switches your entire music context without touching the app.

  5. Your ‘Replay All Time’ and ‘Perfect Focus’ playlists have 77% overlap

These two playlists are nearly identical based on the data. If you’re using them for different purposes, the distinction isn’t reflected in the track selection. Worth a manual audit — either merge them or actively differentiate them. A playlist that’s ‘all your most-played tracks’ and ‘tracks for focus’ shouldn’t be almost the same list unless your most-played tracks are all focus music (which, given C418, is actually plausible).

  6. OCRemix deserves its own discovery workflow

Your Video Game genre is now fully consolidated at 1,068 tracks — all OCRemix local files and streaming game music unified under one label. This makes the genre chart much more honest: Video Game is your single largest genre, bigger than Rock (805) or Pop (728). Worth keeping in mind when thinking about playlist balance and what the algorithm thinks you are.

  7. ‘Autoplay’ after a playlist ends is where Apple’s algorithm hurts you most

When your curated playlist ends, Apple Music’s Autoplay kicks in and that’s where the bad recommendations live. You can turn off Autoplay: tap the Queue icon → toggle Autoplay off. Or, build playlists long enough that Autoplay rarely triggers. Your Electric Pulse (256 tracks) and Lo-Fi Chill (250) are already doing this right — that’s intentional or lucky, but it’s correct.

  8. OCRemix: your workflow is already excellent — keep doing it

Correction from an earlier version of this report: the OCRemix judge panel and rating system is for the site’s archivists and maintainers, not general users. The right read of what you’re actually doing is much more impressive: you manually downloaded all ~5,000 tracks from the site, listened through them, and hand-rated them 3–5 stars — importing the ~950 favorites that made the cut. You’re also checking the site weekly for new uploads and adding them through the same personal filter. That’s a genuinely rigorous curation process that no algorithm can replicate. The practical tip here: your Apple star ratings on those OCRemix tracks are data we can use in future passes to further analyze which game franchises or remix styles you gravitate toward most. If you ever want to do a deep-dive on the OCRemix collection specifically — top games represented, styles you favor, gaps worth filling — that’s a future analysis worth doing.
