About

I’m Doug Greene, a UX / Design Engineer. I trained as a graphic designer and have spent twenty years building for the web.

These days

At work, I’m the one people come to when something needs to look right, usually before there’s anything to look at. In ten years at HeadLight, my scope has grown from report templates to the design system, component library and configuration-driven forms of a platform for transportation and bridge construction.

I plan and lead platform-wide changes from first draft to production, and I care most about accessibility, performance, and designs other engineers can extend.

Experience

Senior Software Engineer, HeadLight

2016 to now · Seattle, hybrid and remote

A SaaS platform that state transportation departments, engineering firms and materials labs use to manage transportation and bridge construction.

  • Created the platform’s design system in 2023 and its in-house component library in 2024, and remain the main contributor to both.
  • Planned and led the platform-wide replacement of a third-party select library, under a no-lost-features rule. I built the final phase, 580 fields on 107 forms, as one guarded switch-over, backed by parity tests and a sweep of 125 real documents.
  • Built the platform’s reference form on my own initiative: a working directory of every input type and form feature. Engineering, QA, customer experience and sales now use it to test, check behavior and demo features before they ship.
  • Cut load time on that reference form by about 75%, and cut the data every form downloads by about 4x on first open and over 30x after. Moved the daily-report PDFs to a new engine that renders photo-heavy reports about 6x faster.
  • Created the forms test suite, now about 1,925 tests, and delivered a tiered accessibility pass: contrast, read-only states, and error messages tied to their fields.
  • Coach developers and customer-experience staff on building forms from configuration, teaching from the reference forms. They now build new form themes on their own.
